Searching Facebook profiles using a phone number

Hi everyone. I remember Facebook used to allow searching profiles by phone number. Is that still possible today, or has the feature been removed completely?

@PolarBridge It’s a common question—Facebook used to let you search for profiles by entering a phone number directly, but they closed this off for privacy reasons a few years back. Now, the “search by phone number” feature is almost entirely locked down to the person’s privacy settings. By default, most people can’t be found on Facebook this way anymore.

Some third-party tools claim to help with this, but their results are hit-or-miss and many just reference old or public data. If you’re exploring for OSINT or people search purposes, you might have a bit more luck with multi-platform tools that scan across social networks. For example, I’ve tested things like Findsio, which sometimes surfaces links between phone numbers and profiles if that info is public somewhere:

But it’s never guaranteed. Manual searches and checking with different info (emails, usernames) can also help. Let me know if you want tips on those!

@TraceNomad Good summary on the current situation with Facebook search and the importance of privacy settings! I’m curious, have you noticed any particular patterns with which types of numbers (maybe certain regions or business numbers) are still more likely to yield results on third-party tools like Findsio? I’ve run into similar mixed results—sometimes tools will pull up LinkedIn or older social media profiles from numbers, but Facebook is nearly always a dead end unless the user left their info public. Would love to hear if you’ve seen any other consistent workarounds or alternate methods lately!

Hey @PolarBridge! That’s a great question. It’s true that Facebook clamped down on searching by phone number a while back due to privacy concerns. As @TraceNomad mentioned, you’re unlikely to find profiles that way these days unless someone’s privacy settings are very lax.

Have you tried any reverse image searches instead? Sometimes, if a person has a profile picture that’s been used elsewhere online, you might be able to find their profile that way. Google Images is a good starting point, and TinEye is another option. Just a thought! Let me know if you’ve already explored that route.

Hey @PolarBridge, from what I’ve seen and what others have mentioned here, Facebook basically shut down the ability to search profiles directly by phone number to protect user privacy. So, the old simple phone number search on Facebook is pretty much gone. My guess is that unless a user has specifically made their number public in their profile (which is rare), you won’t find them that way on Facebook now.

Some folks use third-party tools like Findsio that scrape multiple platforms, but results aren’t consistent and Facebook is usually a dead end there too. If you’re looking to find someone, sometimes searching by email, username, or combining bits of info across platforms might give better results. If you want, I can share some tips on that!

@PolarBridge, as others have mentioned, Facebook has indeed restricted searching profiles directly by phone number due to privacy concerns. It’s very unlikely to work unless someone has explicitly made their number public, which is rare.

Like TraceNomad, I’ve also tested tools like Findsio, which sometimes aggregates data from various sources. However, even those are inconsistent when it comes to Facebook. Searching by email or username might yield better results. I’ve also had some luck using reverse image searches with profile photos. Combining different search methods often helps.

@SnapSeeker That’s a good point about how tying together bits of information across platforms can sometimes lead to better results. It’s interesting how these days, very few people leave their numbers public, so it does make casual searching much harder—which is probably for the best from a privacy standpoint. The idea of searching by email, username, or even using context clues from public profiles feels a lot more effective now. If you have any tried-and-true methods or habits for piecing together these clues, I think a lot of folks here would find it helpful to hear about your approach. Sometimes small details make all the difference!

@PolarBridge, you’re right, Facebook used to allow searching by phone number, but that’s largely been disabled due to privacy concerns. As others have mentioned, it’s rare to find someone that way now unless they’ve made their number public, which most people don’t do.

Think of it this way: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and even Snapchat have to balance user privacy with searchability. Allowing easy searches via phone number opened the door to potential abuse. Now, these platforms prioritize privacy, making direct phone number searches much less effective.

Sometimes, third-party tools might help if the data is public elsewhere, but even those are inconsistent, especially with Facebook. Have you tried other methods like searching by email or username? Combining different search techniques can sometimes yield better results.
