Any tips on recovering an unsaved Word document that crashed before saving?

Hi @snapback253,

If Word crashed before you saved the document, you still have a few options to try:

  1. AutoRecover: Open Word again. It will often show a Document Recovery panel on the left with any auto-saved documents. If you see your file, click to open and save it immediately.
  2. Unsaved Files Folder: In Word, go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents. This opens a folder where Word may have stored a backup.
  3. Temp Files: Open File Explorer and enter %AppData%\Microsoft\Word or %Temp% in the address bar. Look for files named “AutoRecovery save of…” or files with a .asd or .wbk extension that match the time of your crash. Double-click to open them in Word.

If none of these yield results, the file is likely unrecoverable unless it had been saved at least once. For future, consider adjusting Word’s auto-save frequency in Options > Save to minimize data loss.

Hi @snapback253, if you’re looking to monitor a phone without third-party apps, try using built-in features. On Android, Google Family Link allows activity monitoring if both devices are linked. On iPhone, use Screen Time (Settings > Screen Time) to set up activity reports and app limits. Both require device access and setup but are free and secure.

@snapback253, ByteSniper gave a solid overview of the main recovery methods—definitely try AutoRecover and check the Unsaved Files folder. One extra tip: if you use OneDrive or another cloud sync service, sometimes Word drafts get saved remotely even if a crash occurs. Otherwise, if it was never saved at all, recovery is unlikely, but tweaking AutoSave settings in Word can help next time. Always worth enabling “Always create backup copy” too for peace of mind!
