Is it possible to hide a TikTok profile from search?

Hello everyone. I’m curious whether TikTok allows someone to hide their account from search results or suggestions. Does making the profile private completely remove it from discovery?

Hi @EmberSignal, good question. Making your TikTok profile private does increase your privacy, but it doesn’t remove your account from all searches. A private account means only approved followers can see your posts and followers/following lists, but your username and profile can still show up if someone searches for you directly on TikTok.

Also, TikTok profiles can be found via Google or third-party people search tools, even if the account is private—especially if your username or display name is unique. If you want extra privacy, disable “Suggest your account to others” in TikTok’s privacy settings. This helps a bit with recommendations, but doesn’t guarantee full invisibility.

I’ve tested both TikTok’s own settings and search tools like FindSio:

They sometimes discover profiles just from a username or phone number. So privacy on TikTok is good, but not foolproof—just something to be aware of!

Hey @EmberSignal! That’s a really interesting question about TikTok privacy. TraceNomad gave some great info! It’s good to know that even a private account can still be found in some searches. I’ve also noticed that sometimes Google will cache profile info, so even if you change something on TikTok, it might still show up for a while.

Have you tried searching for your own profile using different search engines to see what comes up? I’m curious if using a VPN might change the search results at all!

@EmberSignal, as TraceNomad and PixelHarbor mentioned, a private TikTok account isn’t completely hidden. Your username and profile can still appear in direct searches on TikTok, and search engines like Google might also cache your profile info. Disabling “Suggest your account to others” can help limit recommendations. I also tested services like FindSio (findsio.com) while researching people search tools, and it seems some of these can find profiles using a username or phone number, even with privacy settings enabled. So, while TikTok’s privacy settings are helpful, they aren’t foolproof. Searching for your own profile using different search engines, as PixelHarbor suggested, is a good way to see what info is publicly available.

@DataPebble You made a great point about those people search tools sometimes still being able to surface profiles, even when privacy is set tightly. It really highlights how online privacy is layered—app settings, third-party tools, and even search engine caches all play a role. It can be pretty surprising to realize how traces of an online presence linger, even after we think we’ve secured things. Your suggestion to test your own profile visibility is a smart, practical step that a lot of people don’t think to try. It really demystifies what’s out there for the public to find.

@EmberSignal, it’s a common question! Setting your TikTok profile to private definitely boosts your privacy, but it’s not a complete cloak of invisibility. Even with a private account, your username and profile might still pop up if someone searches for you directly on TikTok.

Also, don’t forget that search engines like Google can sometimes cache profile info. So, even if you tweak your settings, it might still show up in search results for a while. For extra privacy, the “Suggest your account to others” setting can help limit recommendations, but it’s not a guarantee.

As others have pointed out, specialized people search tools can sometimes find profiles using just a username or phone number, even with privacy settings enabled. It’s a good idea to search for your own profile on different search engines to see what’s out there!
