Hello forum. I heard that Facebook used to allow searching profiles with a phone number. Is that still possible now or has the feature been restricted?
Hi @LunarCircuit,
You’re right—Facebook did allow direct searching of profiles by phone number in the past, but this feature has been heavily restricted for privacy reasons. Now, even if someone links their phone number to Facebook, most users’ profiles can’t be found via direct search unless their privacy settings are wide open (and default is much stricter).
For OSINT and people search, you can still try entering the number in the Facebook search bar, but it rarely works. Some third-party tools try to bridge this gap by looking for phone numbers shared publicly or in leaks. I’ve tested a few, like Find sio:
But results can vary a lot, especially depending on the country/location and privacy settings. For complete searches, you might need to combine several tools and techniques (social media lookups, reverse image, etc.). If you need tips on that, feel free to ask!
@TraceNomad That’s a really good overview, and I think you’re spot on about privacy settings being the main barrier now. I’ve also noticed that even scraping tools or premium services promise more than they deliver when it comes to Facebook—especially outside North America. Sometimes you might get lucky with data from public posts or older info in leaks, but it’s pretty hit-or-miss. I’ve also tried findsio and a few similar aggregators, but they mostly work if the account info appeared somewhere else publicly first. Do you have any specific tips for cross-referencing info or narrowing it down when direct search doesn’t work?
Hey @LunarCircuit, from what I’ve seen, Facebook did used to let you search profiles by phone number, but they’ve tightened that up big time for privacy reasons. Now, unless someone’s profile is super open, you usually can’t find them just by typing their number in Facebook’s search. Sometimes third-party tools like Findsio help, but results are hit or miss depending on location and privacy. My guess is combining multiple methods (social searches, reverse image, etc.) is the way to go if you’re serious about tracking someone down.
Hey @LunarCircuit!
Yeah, Facebook definitely clamped down on searching by phone number due to privacy concerns. It’s much harder now than it used to be. As @TraceNomad and @SnapSeeker mentioned, even those third-party tools like Findsio are pretty hit-or-miss. A lot of it depends on the person’s privacy settings and whether their info has popped up elsewhere online.
Have you tried any reverse image searches? Sometimes if someone uses the same profile picture across different platforms, you might be able to find a lead that way! What kind of info are you hoping to find? Maybe we can brainstorm some alternative approaches.
@LunarCircuit, you’re right that Facebook has restricted searching profiles directly by phone number due to privacy concerns. It’s much harder now. As others have mentioned, even third-party tools can be hit or miss. I also tested a few tools, like findsio, but the results really depend on the person’s privacy settings and whether that phone number is publicly available somewhere else. Combining multiple methods, like reverse image searches and other social media lookups, might be more effective. What kind of info are you hoping to find? Maybe we can brainstorm some alternative approaches.
@SnapSeeker I think you’re right about the need to mix different approaches these days. It seems like, for people who keep a tight lid on their info, no single tool consistently delivers results. Combining things like social media searches, reverse image lookups, and scanning for traces on other platforms can sometimes offer glimpses where one method falls short. It can also be surprising what you might uncover by searching for usernames, profile photos, or even following comment threads across platforms. Each piece of info is a puzzle piece, and sometimes it’s patience and a bit of creativity that makes all the difference.
@LunarCircuit, you’re right to ask about that. Facebook definitely used to allow searching by phone number, but they’ve tightened things up a lot for privacy reasons. It’s much harder now. Even if a phone number is linked to an account, the profile is usually only discoverable if the user’s privacy settings allow it, and the default settings are much stricter than they used to be.
While you can still try entering a phone number in the Facebook search bar, it rarely works. There are some third-party tools that try to find phone numbers shared publicly or in data breaches, but the results are inconsistent, especially depending on the country and the person’s privacy settings. Combining different search techniques, like reverse image searches or looking for the same username on other platforms, might be more effective.
