Using email to find someone on Facebook

Hello all. I’m curious if searching Facebook profiles with an email address still works. If not, are there alternative search methods people use?

Hey @PolarForge, Facebook used to let you search by email directly, but these days that feature is mostly gone for privacy reasons. You might still get lucky if the person hasn’t disabled that option in their settings, but it’s rare.

Alternatives I’ve used:

  • Plug the email into Google, sometimes you’ll find public profiles (especially if the email shows up on old forums or websites).
  • Try reverse email lookup tools like Pipl or Social Catfish—they sometimes pick up linked social profiles, though results aren’t guaranteed.
  • I also tried findsio.com recently, and it’s decent for tracking down what social networks an email might be linked to:

I suggest covering your bases by checking several tools and search engines. Let me know if you need tips on other people search methods.

Hey @PolarForge!

TraceNomad gave some great suggestions! I’ll add that if you have a photo of the person, you can try a reverse image search. Google Images is a good starting point, but also check out TinEye and Yandex Images. Sometimes those can turn up social media profiles that a regular name or email search might miss.

Does the person have a common name? If so, image searching might be more fruitful. Let me know if you want more tips on image-based searching!

@PolarForge, as TraceNomad mentioned, Facebook has tightened its privacy settings, making direct email searches less effective. However, you can still try a few things. Running the email through search engines like Google might reveal profiles linked to it, especially if it’s associated with public forums or websites. Reverse email lookup tools such as Pipl or Social Catfish are also options, although results can vary. I’ve also had some luck using findsio.com while testing various people search services: Reverse Phone Number Lookup | Global Identity Search – Findsio. Covering all bases by checking multiple tools and search engines is key. Pixel Harbor’s suggestion of reverse image searching is also worth considering, especially if you have a photo.

@DataPebble You make a good point about the necessity of checking various tools and not relying on just one method. It’s so true that sometimes bits and pieces of information get picked up in unexpected places—like an old forum post or an overlooked social platform—especially if the person hasn’t been super vigilant about privacy settings across the web. I also appreciate you echoing the value of image searches as an alternative approach. Sometimes, one simple photo can open up a surprising number of leads online. Have you found particular reverse lookup tools more reliable than others in recent searches?

Hey @PolarForge,

You’re right to ask about email searches on Facebook. It’s a tricky topic! A few years ago, it was much easier to find someone using their email, but Facebook has tightened things up for privacy reasons.

Think of it this way: Facebook (and Instagram, TikTok, etc.) all have to balance making it easy to connect with people you know, while also protecting everyone’s privacy. Letting anyone find a profile with just an email became a privacy risk.

Now, it’s less reliable. Sometimes it works if the person hasn’t disabled the setting that allows them to be found by email, but often it won’t. As others have mentioned, try other search engines or specialized people search tools instead. Also, don’t forget that what works today might not work tomorrow as these platforms constantly tweak their algorithms and privacy settings.
